I watched the VH1 show today about Arsenio Hall Show and relised how much I loved watching the show. I miss talk shows like that today and wish that he would do it again. But my main question is are they ever going to release the shows on dvd so that the fans of the show can buy them. I would love to have them as part of my collection.

Thanks for setting the record straight, Dannolanl. I knew that my information was correct, as I've been an avid follower of the wonderful world of home video and its inner workings since the mid 80's. I don't know where he's getting his "freshening the music" theory from, that's a new one on me.
Does he honestly mean to say that they went and changed all the music from say, "Tour of Duty" because the powers-that-be thought the music wasn't contemporary enough? It used classic, well-known hits of the 60's and 70's as an integral part of the soundtrack, and you can darn well believe they didn't want to shell out for the rights to include the music in the DVD sets. So bang - we get a lovely generic music soundtrack in place of the classic songs that helped make that show what it was in the first place. Why? Because it was cheaper.
Or how about the recent release of the Addams Family series on DVD, where two short clips had to be removed because Morticia was singing a song they couldn't get the rights to. Interesting side note, an EARLIER video release actually included said clips, but it seems the rights to use that song had to be re-acquired AGAIN for the current release, and this time they were unable to secure the rights.
Anyhow, I could go on for hours listing examples, but I think the point has been driven home by now. Thanks again for the info, Dannolanl!

Your wrong im an intellectual property rights lawyer and can tell you 100% that the rights do have to be re-acquired its called a transfer of medium. While newer shows include this in the initial contract, shows made back 10 years ago do not. So a show made in the early 90s would have to re-acquire or else replace any music. This is expensive but lots of shows still do it just look at the SNL season one box set. Normally Im not bothered posting on these but I couldnt let trandate's tone of superiority towards other posters when he is totally in the wrong go. Hope this settles it.

I think you misunderstood what I was saying - rights for BROADCAST and rights for HOME VIDEO are two very different animals. Why do you think so many shows are released to DVD with a bunch of the music changed? Because it's bloody expensive to license music for home video. Case in point: In the early 90's, several episodes of the David Letterman Show were released on video, with ALL the musical performances cut out. Why? Simple - so they could offer low-cost videos of the show without having to shell out for the rights to include the musical performances.
Yes, the syndication rights would have been negotiated at the time the shows were originally made. But that falls into the "broadcast" category. The whole "TV on Home Video" boom didn't really pick up steam until the past 5 years or so, so it is HIGHLY unlikely that home video rights for those same musical performances would have been negotiated in the early 90's. And for something with as low an interest level as The Arsenio Hall Show, it is unlikely nigh impossible that we will ever see an official, uncut DVD release because of the cost involved to acquire the rights to the musical performances for home video release.
On the flip side, take a look at the recent DVD releases of SCTV. They acquired the rights to ALL the musical guest performances, and as a result the sets are extremely expensive. If the home video rights to those performances had been "signed off" at the time of production, why did they need to acquire said rights to include the music? Broadcast rights do NOT equal (and never have equalled) home video rights. Nowadays, with TV on DVD being as popular as it is, things are much different than they were as little as ten years ago, so this is rarely an issue with current programs - it is assumed that a show will be released on video, so the rights are negotiated at the time of production right across the board. But for OLDER shows, rights have to be re-negotiated to include licensed music in home video releases.
In short, what I was saying is there are TWO main reasons why a DVD release of The Arsenio Hall Show is unlikely/impossible - lack of interest, AND the cost of the home video rights to the musical performances (which ties right back into lack of interest - if there was enough interest, it would justify the expense. Since there isn't, it doesn't.)
Clear?

It's highly unlikely that the show would be released in its full, uncut, original form (if at all), given all the necessary (ie: expensive) rights clearances for the musical performances and whatnot. I could see it showing up in repeats on some specialty channel somewhere, but given the limited fan base and the fact that the majority of people out there simply don't remember the show (or those that do don't care enough to pay money for it), it just wouldn't be worth the expense for a company to release official DVDs.
That said, episodes do turn up in fan trading circles from time to time.
It's a shame, yes, since the show was most definitely an important part of the popular culture at the time, especially during the first couple of seasons. I loved the show, personally! I thought it was great fun to watch, a real "party" atmosphere every night. And Arsenio himself was always a joy to watch - always full of fun, and his stand-up skills definitely got the chance to shine in his always hilarious opening monologues.
I miss the show, and I doubt we'll ever see it's like again.
