You're better off asking the people who allegedly hate the episode.

I'm not aware of this episode being hated.
The stand-out moment for me would have to be that vaguely disturbing scene where Bart taunts Homer by telling him that he was "faking it" when he used to push him on the swings. Bleh, now there's an allusion which went right over my head as a kid.

I can't agree with that at all, I've met many nice people there.
And if you think their opinions are odd, Dead Homer's Society are even worse. They actually hate Marge Be Not Proud!

I'm registered on nohomers, and there people don't seem to be a fan of this episode, which is true for some other places as well. This is one of the few ones I've found where plenty of people like the episodes.

The character of Tom was written with Tom Cruise in mind to voice him. Cruise is apparently a big fan of the show, but he turned the episode down.

Season 4, Episode 14. Not sure where the Tom Cruise reference is coming from. This episode had some great scenes, from Homer responding to Marge with "I'm on my way"; Homer's dream of finding Bart's skeleton; to Bart getting the number for the charity from watching Tuesday Night Live. And let's not forget Homer mentoring "Pepsi".

115 is still pretty low considering its a golden era episode. Its one of my favourites from season 4.

According to the episode ratings for this site it ranks somewhere around the 115th mark (8.1 out of 10)
While not a classic its still above a hell of a lot of other episodes

I didn't know people hated it. And after googling it I find no evidence that people hate it. It seems to rank very highly.
