He actually DID staple his hat on. the video is out there. After a few failed takes due to his hat blowing off, Ford grabs the stapler and whacks a few in and announces
"THERE! now it'll stay on!"
later you see blood running down his face.
"He's dusted, busted and disgusted, but he's ok"
