Whatever happened to Eric's parents? Did they die? If so, how I wonder?

Given that Disney tends to kill off parents (except in 101 Dalmatians where the parents are the main characters) I think Eric's parents died in a shipwreck or may have been murdered. To me Grimsby seemed to take care of Eric the same way Alfred took care of Bruce Wayne in basically every Batman production. Better yet, Grimsby is Eric's answer to Bruce Wayne having Alfred.
