I always thought it was a take on the end of Back to the Future where Doc is hanging from the clock tower.
Which itself was referencing Safety Last.
So many stories, so little time.

The movie is called SAFETY LAST, was made in 1923 and features Harold Lloyd hanging on to a clock!
