the error in that scene is that Hayes didn't steal on the first pitch. He didn't know the pitcher would throw Jake inside.

Well, Hayes was on second to start the play. Jake squared to bunt which may have helped conceal that Hayes was running on the pitch. The fielders were playing back too, because Jake was calling his shot.
I forget how many outs there were at the time, but even if the Yankees thought Jake was trying to sacrifice, the play is at first base. Had whoever picked up the ball not attempted to throw to first, he would have had no play at third because Hayes had taken off for third on the pitch.
So at worst, the Indians have first and third, because if the Yankees don't throw to first, Jake is on with a bunt single and Hayes stops at third.

the only reason it worked is because they threw to first base to get Jake out. If they threw home, Willie would have been toast.
I've seen it happen before, sometimes if a team feels the opposition has a weak throwing first baseman, they will try and expose him.
