I'm not sure if this movie has ever been played in college psychology classes or anything, but I thought Tod bonding with Garry was really touching in its own way. Tod ended up being kinda like a big brother he never had.
It was clear he had issues from not having a dad around (and later finding out he was a deadbeat/scum who abandoned them for his new family). While of course it's normal for every 13 year old boy to beat off Garry couldn't confide in stuff like that to his mom (remember when she found the pornos and asked him if he had questions about sex? lol) so its not unusual for him to internalize that he was a perv, especially if he didn't yet know that every guy does.
Point being, even just something as small as that, when Tod told him its totally normal, it made him feel much better about himself and he started coming out of his shell. When Tod said he was messed up, he probably just meant all the problems he was havingand not as an insult.

I think Todd meant he was messed up because Gerry thought he was "a pervert or something". Not because he was into porn.

And right after he says he's a messed up little dude, Tod said he told Garry it was a normal thing ha ha. He probably just found Garry to be odd for other reasons he wasn't the only one.
