If a man leaves his kids with the woman, he has desserted them, but she can leave his kids and go off on her own, and as long as she misses them, she's still a good mother who the kids will just come back to when dad is in jail?
I can't help but feel the other side to this story is Mother Love with Diana Rigg and David McCallum in which she was vengeful to her ex-husband to the end, only to find out her son had been seeing his father without telling her.
I just watched this again yesterday and when Begley, completely unknowing as to what Ruth had done, seemed content and at ease with where his life had gone. He had been accused of embezzling and he had done none of it.
I was reminded of Rigg in Mother Love framing the cousin for the second wife's death and he was put away and he found happiness as well, someone to always think for him (he was a little slow) and she visited him and she didn't seem at all pleased with his contentment. She wanted to punish him for having contact with her ex-husband as well.

He had been embezzling. Just in smaller amounts so as not to get caught. Ruth and Olivia got into the computers and moved bigger amounts so that it would be noticed and he'd be caught.
