So happy to finally catch up with this series, which all my women friends followed avidly when it was on TV and I didn't have a TV!! I'd become totally engrossed until! in Series 3, which I'm watching now, Jane Tennison starts chewing gum, on camera, a great deal of the time. Open-mouthed, disgustingly, and sometimes apparently with a mic catching the pig noises.
As probably doesn't need saying - I'm one of those people who has an uncontrollable hate reaction to it. I don't want to hate the character, or the show, or Helen Mirren, but it's going that way.
I don't think any American filmmaker, big- or small-screen, would let this happen, as having the giant head of somebody jawing away onscreen also upstages everybody else. Please tell me she's going to stop!!! Are British people so polite that nobody told her to cut it out?
