I would like a real answer as to why he does this.
The DeLorean begins to electrify and we see a closeup of the time circuits ready to return to 1985. Marty grabs the cowboy hat and puts it on at that moment.
What was the reason for this?
And what kind of hat does he wear?

Marty knew that if the DeLorean showed up with people around he'd need to think of a quick gimmick to explain himself and the hat worked with the outfit and the car being on the rails. He might have made up a story about a music video for his band or something
The hat is a flat top felt cowboy hat or a Stetson Folklore 🤠
