So am I right in thinking that he couldn't actually see at all through them? You know you are making real art when you do it blind because (nine whole years) in the future some people will have funny white eyes for some reason.

Nah. Colored contacts don't blind people. Making them white shouldn't be any worse than other colors. The light goes into the pupils, and those aren't blocked.
At least, that's what I think.
