Good question; I think the answer is a combination of both. Josette and Jeremiah were both very attractive, and he was a lot younger and probably more virile than Barnabus. But remember that Angelique was a very prolific witch, who probably had no doubts about her ability to use this spell.

I have a question, the spell that Angelique used on Josette and Jeremiah, did she know it would work, and was it used for messing with their feelings/minds or unleash their repressed forbidden feelings they had for each other since they met and Angelique knew or had some idea about them?
