True and also more funny, too. Paul's inner thoughts in the novel are sometimes just hilarious. And the book has bits that are darkly humorous, such as Annie giving Paul an old clunker of a typewriter, where all the most used letters soon stop working, leaving lacunae in the typed text which Annie faithfully fills in
