It's symbolic, the idea that she has a lesser status when all is said and done. Instead of being his wife, she is permanently relagated to a more oblivious role in his legacy. It's quite understandable IMHO.
I have personally seen a similar instance of mourning under a little different different circumstances. A friend of mine died in Iraq in 2003. Him and his fianc called it off the previous December after he failed to meet her ultimatum to change career paths. 4 months later he was dead. She always thought they would get back together eventually. She wasn't on his Page 2 as a Dependent, she didn't even rate a notification. His parents didn't know her and they were on the other side of the country. She found out about a month after he died, when she reached out to his Units Spouse support group. He promised to write, call or somehow contact her. When he didn't she got worried. She even missed the funeral.
