THE REFLECTING SKIN was filled with strange, inexplicable adults. Often, this reminded me of a David Lynch movie with its titular existential, metaphorical weirdoes or people who appear to be relatively normal, for the most part, but on occasion act in unfathomable ways.
Such is the case of British immigrant and middle-aged widow, Dolphin Blue, whos name comes straight out of a David Lynch movie. She could have been another character in BLUE VELVET. For the 1950s, no English woman would have had a name like that which sounds like a stripper's moniker, straight out of downtown Los Angeles, San Francisco, New York City, Miami, or Fort Lauderdale. The inexplicable suicide of her American husband is never explained, only mere weeks after he brings her to the United States. What is clear is that Dolphin Blue is lonely, sexually frustrated without a man, and borderline mental breakdown. Like all the adults in the movie, she harbors some past emotional and psychological trauma. She hints at just as much.
She does have a sexy English accent. American guys in the 21st century find English girl accents really sexy and a turn-on, even if they make fun of it. Cameron even likes the way Dolphin Blue pronounces his name with her English accent and I have to agree with him. When Cameron and Dolphin Blue start making out in her house, I find myself feeling sympathy for both of them.
In another David Lynchesque interpretation, are the young guys in the black sedan a metaphor for death? Are they demonic? The director wanted us to come away from the movie totally perplexed and thinking. Dolphin Blue hops a ride with several, lusty young men in the black sedanwhat was she thinking? Later her corpse is discovered near the boy's farmhouse home, off the side of the road just barely into the wheat field. She is lying in a neat supine position, her clothes are intact, and her face bears no signs of trauma, neither the rest of her body from what we can see. She seems to have simply lain down, gone to sleep and never awoke. Clearly we are led to believe the young men in the black sedan are not all what they're supposed to be.

Lindsay Duncan was very good here, but I would have loved to see Tilda Swinton or Miranda Richardson as DB instead!

The men in the car did not exist. They were the imagination of Seth. Seth did all the killing in this movie. He was severely mentally ill. No wonder, having both parents mentally ill.
