Maureen O' Hara said, "John Candy was one of my all-time favorite leading men. He was pleasant and courteous. The depth of John Candy's talent did surprise me. I didn't expect it to be so great. It didn't take long for me to see that he was not only a comedic genius but an actor with an extraordinary dramatic talent. He reminded me a great deal of Charles Laughton."
Maureen O'Hara passed away in her sleep on October 24, 2015 at her home in Idaho. She was 95 years old.

I agree TheMociety. Candy was so good in this. I suspect he would have at least been nominated once for an Oscar had he lived a little longer.
He's heart-breaking in the scene where he confronts his mother over the way she once embarrassed his late father and ruined one of his accounts due to her anti-Semitism and snobbish attitude.
Danny Muldoon was such a sweet, huggable, self-effacing guy in this film, much like Del Griffith in 'Planes, Trains and Automobiles' but less inclined to be occasionally loud and boorish.

I thought if John Candy had lived longer, he would have eventually won himself an Oscar. You could see his heartwarming roles in movies from "Planes, Trains and Automobiles" to "Cool Runnings". He definitely was a flexible actor.
If you're not taking any steps forward, you're not moving at all.

It was Candy's best serious role, with a nice helping of comedy mixed in.
The comedy wasn't stupid or over-the-top slapstick, except for the final airplane scene with O'Hara and Quinn, and that silly scene was fully intended to be silly, to make a point.

John Candy's best role in my opinion. He showed that he could do more than just being funny. A shame he didn't get more roles like this.
RIP

another great john candy performance
as evidenced by the fact that here's somebody who doesn't like 'romantic comedies' saying how much he liked it.
notice that john hughes had his mitts in on this film.
ally sheedy and maureen o'hara are pretty darn good in support, too. really, the acting is superb all around. and, even though the film observes the main r.c. formula features, it's always gonna be as fresh as one of those flowers anthony quinn keeps passing out to the ladies in this movie.
