Perhaps the best part about the theatrical version was that Mortianna was a REAL witch (or at least we weren't told otherwise). I guess I don't really mind whether or not she is the Sherrif's motherbut she HAS to be a REAL witch. There is no real payoff when he discovers she's a fraud.

Me. Like some other films, they really cut the stuff they should have for the theatrical cut. The extended edition seems like it's two entirely different films playing concurrently sometimes. Editors did fine job for the theatrical cut. Really the only additional scene I like is when Rickman tours the dungeon asking those poor chaps if they prefer pain or death. That was funny, and harmless to the film. I also like the scene where Tuck confronts Azeem while he's talking to the little girl. McShane's intensity is fantastic.
All in all I think the theatrical cut told the story as well as it was going to be told. One of a handful of VHS tapes (along with The Terminator and Last of the Mohicans) that I keep around because they got jacked up so bad when digital media came along.
but she HAS to be a REAL witch. There is no real payoff when he discovers she's a fraud.
100% agree. Mortiana's character was excellent in the theatrical cut, and was somewhat ruined by the scenes they initially cut.
