the entire movie we see him as this uncompromising evil man. but in the end notice how he said to the witch"for once in my life will you let me have something that is pure"
Sheriff George said to that little girl "i never knew my parents, i had a harsh childhood, i will tell you about it sometime"
its my theory that the witch killed his parents and raised him as a pagan. in the end he was growing tired of her and wanted some semblance of a non pagan lifestyle
but don't get me wrong, i am not saying he had good in him on the contrary i am saying he was evil but he was evil because of the witch
