I voted supporting but I never thought it was such terrible fraud that he opted to push for lead. His presence is felt even when he is offscreen, and his chemistry with Foster is what made the movie the phenomenon that it was.
His Oscar win also spared us what would almost certainly have been an undeserved win for Nick Nolte in the dreadful Prince of Tides.
