Newt would have dragged the story down. What? You wanted to see her survive and get raped by a bunch of inmates? Killing Hicks off was BALLSY! Alien 3 was art. Alien 3 was perhaps the last time a studio really chose to do something in a legitimate, artistic way than just go the easy route.. keep Hicks and Newt alive, have a bunch of action scenes involving xenomorphs and have a nice happy ending where they go off with Ripley and live like a family on some tropical island.
This is a HORROR franchise people, wake up! Ripley is a tragic figure. James Cameron took so many liberties with the canon, HE was the one who took things away from what they were should have been. A Queen Alien? Xenomorphs easily killed by rifles? That sucked the horror and dread out of the franchise, and Alien 3 attempted (I admit, perhaps poorly) to put it back in. However, I think Alien 3 is a great science fiction movie.. and it is my favourite of the saga.
I implore to everyone reading this. Get hold of the 2010 BLU-RAY ASSEMBLY CUT of the movie and give it another watch, give it another chance. Who cares if Fincher disowned it.. artists misunderstand their own work all the time. There are plenty of things you enjoy which are probably disliked by the people who created them.
So.. if you like or don't like it, I don't care. But at least give it another chance, and at least watch the version which most closely resembles the original vision.
I will always maintain that (in my opinion) this is the most underrated science fiction movie of all time.

For the 90s that was a good kill, but if it was done today a good head-splotch in a more dimly lit room at a slower pace would be more apt.

LOL I agree, the one glaring weakness of the film for me was the deaths.. they needed more bite (no pun intended) I think Fincher's filming style was to blame, could have used longer shots and more use of shaky cam at those moments.

I totally agree Grenn78. Although some moments of slapstick are unfortunate and weren't needed (being hoisted through the ceiling panel as if to silence his lengthy speech). An alien shouldn't HOIST - it should have bit his head off there and then!

I'd simply like the haters to reconsider watching the definitive 2010 blu-ray special edition (2 hours, 24 minutes)
