The movie gives the impression that Helen comes from money. If so, how did she end up as a crazy cat lady living in a run-down apartment? I understand that she went crazy because of Madlyn, but if she was rich, she could have still lived comfortably. When she rebounds from her nervous breakdown, she suddenly lives in luxury again. How? Was her book really that successful?

It is stated throughout the movie, that Madlyn drove Earnest to become an undertaker. How exactly did she do this? I get that Madlyn was a vain, selfish, monster, who spent her days whoring around, and blowing Earnest's money on plastic surgeries, but how does that in any way, mean that Earnest can't maintain his practice?

Perhaps Helen's family had cut her off when she went loco and then when she appeared to be cured gave her access to funds again.

Ernest's bad marriage to Madeline drove him to drink excessively. You're not allowed to practice medicine while drunk.
