I have always thought of this film as Louis Malle's take on the erotic thriller. It may have been because the marketing of this film was so visibly connected to Basic Instinct in 1992. Upon viewing you really get to experience the same type of tension and confusion as you do from the typical whodunit thriller using a forbidden eroticism as the driving narrative tool. Little deaths?
