This might have been explained before and if so I'm sorry. Started watching Season 12 and all of a sudden Valerie Haywood isn't the ADA anymore and I didn't hear anyone mention why she left the show. Does anyone know?

Thanks. I don't think we have that in the UK

Also, could someone explain to this Englishman who has never had any dealings with NYPD (apart from my keyfob) what a one day rip is. I assume it's a form of pay deduction
Correct! RIP = Reduction In Pay

I've just started watching S12 for the first time and I was wondering that. Suddenly she just vanished, as did Gibson. I'm also still trying to work out how Hatcher managed to poison Andy's fish tank.

The eps with Currie Graham almost ruined the whole show for me. I couldn't stand that character and wanted him to be taken down in some kind of rotten scandal.
At that same time they had that eminently forgettable detective with the long blonde hair. She was also quite annoying as was Obradors.
Haywood was a non-entity, and I thought they only brought her in was to give Jones a 'love interest'. Big mistake.

This site here gives pretty good explanations for the departures of many actors/characters:
https://www.stwing.upenn.edu/~sepinwal/summaries/minifaq.html
Garcelle Beauvais-Nilon (Valerie Haywood): The budget had to be trimmed for the final season, and Garcelle, whose character was never well-integrated into the show, became one of the casualties. Valerie Haywood just isn't the local ADA for the 15th precinct anymore, and she and Baldwin don't seem to be dating anymore.
John O'Donohue (Eddie Gibson): Though he'd been hanging around the show for years, O'Donohue wound up with the shortest tenure of any regular castmember, only a half-season. Essentially, the producers decided that the Gibson-as-boss idea wasn't really bearing fruit, so they replaced O'Donohue with Currie Graham. As Lt. Bale told the detectives at the end of the final season premiere, Eddie was replaced as 15th squad commander because NYPD brass felt the squad was out of control.

Thanks for your answer. I wished they had mentioned her and where she went. Also the Eddie character.

They got rid of her, Jessalyn Gilsig, and John O'Donohue (Eddie Gibson) when the final season of NYPD Blue began. Characters who weren't an integral part of the show were cut. Trimming the budget.
