<p dir="auto">Clark gets the gold shield because of one courageous act.  It works out for the department because he ends up being a good detective but what if it hadn't?  What if a crappy beat cop is a jerk but does something courageous - he just gets to be a detective?  That sounds like a scary chance to take on someone that might not work out.<br />
Makes you wonder what Mike Richards did to become a detective or Eddie Gibson.  Eddie Gibson is an example - he was night shift and seemed pretty clueless - but he gets promoted to Sgt then ends up back supervising the squad and we all know he's worthless!</p>

For the investigative track the promotion is achieved either by a heroic or other unusual act or legally required by performing an investigative function in excess of 18 months.</p>
