Just shows that Batman doesn't mess around. He was all business as he smashed right through that window and started throwing those gangsters around. He uppercuts the one guy, another is thrown against a glass panel on the wall, and then he upturns a table on one of them. Oh, and the icing on cake: as Bats starts after Chuckie, the gangster under the table is reaching for his gun, which is almost within reach. Instead of just kicking the gun aside, Batman stomps the table, knocking the guy out. A nice bit of dark humor there. It was a good way to start the movie, IMO. Just get everything going and show the folks what they came to see: Batman kicking ass. Then they can focus on starting the plot and bring in the characters one by one. No need for a slow build-up, start up with the action. Batman didn't even need to say 1 word the whole time.
That's one of the many good things about Mask of the Phantasm: they could do much more than on the Animated Series, which SB&P seemed to keep on a tight rope. Here, Batman could fight more brutally, Joker could be more sinister and sadistic, and all of it not gratuitous or done just to push that PG rating.
So, yeah, I like the opening fight scene. Gets the ol' juices flowing.
