I thought maybe He Who Walks Behind the Rows lived inside of the corn so when the children ate it that allowed the entity to become part of them and possess them. I may be wrong, though.

Apparently it wasn't, because the supernatural entity is real.
That whole subplot was pretty dumb and meaningless.
I think selling the tainted corn was supposed to be the main sin the adults of the town were being punished for, but the kids would have just killed them for other reasons if not that.
