We only see him interact with Spartan before the freezing. They have a sort of moment, Smithers tells Spartan he is sorry he has to freeze him. When I saw him still working the cryoprison 36 years later I assumed he'd have another moment with Spartan but there was nothing. Killed off before he could see Spartan thawed out. A wasted opportunity.
