I think he just simply served as male presence. Showing how whole the family was, and how the "good" son could have so much evil in spite of coming from two loving parents,

Agreed he was underused - but maybe him not being around was a reason why Henry could get away with so much. Also, if Henry didn't have a father, that could be seen as a reason why he was evil, which would have weakened the film's premise.

it would have been nice to see him have a bit more to do, especially since Daniel Hugh Kelly is a really good actor, especially in dramas.
