they talked a little in the movie about John Gustofson's wife Mae, but I couldn't help but wonder if the two were divorced or whether John was a widower. Can someone please help me out?

i'm watching it now. and he states he was married to her for 20 years and that she was no angel. or something similar to that effect. which to me sounds like divorce. plus when Buck henry's character is talking about how his wife was married 11 of the 20 years they were married.

I wondered that too, but it isn't clear in the movie. Also, I wondered why John's wife's name was May, and Max's wife's name was Amy, a simple anagram of the name.

If I remember correctly it sounded more like Mae had left John, so I would guess they were divorced.
Ohhh, it's all so complicated, with the flowers, and the romance, and the lies upon lies.
