I also think the way she blurted out about not being a high school etc showed she was someone who spoke without thinking, making her a bigger risk of talking.

I guess he killed her because she caught his lie and he wanted to cover up any loose ends apparently. What gets me, then if he is that careful why did he then give it as a clue over the phone to Horrigan? (His line: "Some people die simply because they're from Minneapolis")

The real question is why even bother lying about something as innocuous as where you're from. If he had done that, even she was from that town/city, he would at least know the area.

I hated that 'There's no "Whatever the school's name was' in Minneapolis.' line.
One, even if there wasn't, why would you embarrass a client like that in a bank? It's none of your goddamn business, he's opening an account and you're making small talk. You don't treat customers that way, especially since there's absolutely no reason you would assume something sinister about the man. Other than 'he doesn't want to talk to me', which he establishes not ten seconds later when he says 'I'm running late, is this going to take long?'
So what do you do in that instance? Do you assume he must be a presidential assassin, or do you assume he's a dickbag? The 2nd one, obviously. There's no reason for him to kill her because she doesn't know anything.
Second, according to Wikipedia, Minneapolis has a metro population of 3.3 million people. Even assuming 2.3 million at the time this movie was made, what happened here? Malkovich runs into the one bank teller with the photographic memory of every high school name in a city of two million people?
Absurd. You look at her reaction when she sees him at her house, she's already forgotten about him. Waste of time on the part of the 'master assassin'.
"Harry talks in his sleep, haven't you noticed? FORGETICUS!!!"

Well, remember, at the bank, when she was opening the account for him, she asked where he was from, just making conversation. He replied, Minneapolis. (It was a lie, of course.) But when she replied she was from Minneapolis also, that threw a wrench into his plan. Especially when she asked where he went to high school, and he mentioned the name of a high school that didn't exist in that city. Since she really was from Minneapolis, she would know whether a high school with that name existed there. So naturally, she'd be suspicious. Thus, if the FBI or Secret Service came asking questions, his b******t story would stick out like a sore thumb to her, and she'd easily remember it to tell to them. So this was a risk he couldn't afford. So she had to be killed to tie up that loose end, along with her roommate, because she was a witness.
