So that's why he went to be with his son, because most families would not associate with someone like Gerry.
Spoiler alert for them spoil sports out there! Y'all like spoiled milk, stop crying over it!

Well, you have to remember that in reality, they did not share a cell(this was one of the few changes from the true story made for the film), so that did not contribute to his death at all.
Giuseppe had one lung, due to years of painting with lead paint(in deplorable conditions and without face masks) and the damage done to his lungs was pretty severe, and he developed emphysema, and later Tuberculosis, due to the damp conditions he lived in and was reared in. He had later developed cancer, and at the time of his travelling to England, had just undergone the last of his chemotherapy treatments.
He also had Pulmonary Thrombosis (you see this in the film, when Emma Thompson's character asks if he is getting the right medication).
The conditions in the prison were none too good either, so combining this with his already poor health, meant he was not gonna last too long in prison.

Gerry smoking around him constantly in a confined space didn't help matters much, either.

He had been in poor health for several years, & the conditions in the prison didn't do anything to help matters. So, he just stopped breathing & died.

The movie was twelve years old when you posted this.
I think its time to allow frank discussion of it, isn't it?
