OP is a moron. I drink tons of Scotch and enjoy it both straight and on the rocks. Also I have talked to many Scots about the subject and they are completely divided as to which way they prefer but almost all of them said the same thing: drink it however it tastes best to you. If you are saying ice kills the taste you clearly have very weak taste buds, because even on the rocks I can decipher between a vast array of scotches.

I've been in the UK in the winter, and I think the cellars are cold enough to keep the beer nice and frosty anyway lol. Not sure about the summer, but I'm guessing the cellar would still be cooler than a crowded pub above.

I think the "on the rocks" is an American phenomenon; in Great Britain even the beer in the pubs used to be room temperature; I don't know if that has changed but it was true in the late Seventies.

God there are some REAL snobs here. I've been drinking whiskey many years and If I have it with ice or without does not dictate whether or nor some snob considers me a REAL whiskey drinker. I always have scotch on the rocks I don't let other people decide how I should drink anything. I even tell the bartender to put 7-up in the glass instead of carbonated water. I like THAT taste.

I'm pretty sure the guy who wrote the movie tended bar earlier in his life. So he probably knows about whiskey.
So why put it in the movie anyway?
Maybe it was a subtle shot at the people he's heard (and we've all heard, any of us old enough to sit in a bar) jabbering on about alcohol like they know something, despite clearly not knowing enough to drink it how it's supposed to be done best.
Or maybe he just wanted something that was cool-sounding for the character to say in the movie. I dunno.

Andy wasn't a real whisky drinker or a real whiskey drinker. He didn't seem to be much of a drinker at all, in fact. That line's in there for the writers - kind of the period at the end of Andy's "character development" sentence.
