When re-watching this film, I can't help but admit that I felt there was a compromise that could have been reached to prevent the main conflict of the film.
Unlike many of Miranda's detractors, I completely agreed with her that Daniel's behavior, while well-intentioned, was detrimental to the well-being of their kids. He frequently quit jobs and didn't contribute to the household duties. HOWEVER, I believe that because Daniel was not abusive or a criminal, Miranda was obligated not to divorce him and to instead get to the root of his issues maintaining employment. A compromise would then be reached where he can still be eccentric, yet responsible and balanced.
Empathy and devising solutions to problems is always a better option than destroying stability. When you have children, divorce is selfish, unless the goal is to escape abuse or criminal behavior.

I agree, I think it's selfish to get a divorce because you're not happy. Don't make it about you, stay for your children
Make the best of it because you should have gotten to know the person better before you married, and if you loved them enough to marry them, then you owe it to your children to stay together

I think Miranda expressed in one of her arguments with Daniel or with Miss Doubtful, that she got tired of trying to work it out with Daniel and tired of the bullshit. He just wouldn't change.
So there ya go. They both tried. I dunno why Daniel acted crazy about going through the divorce. All he had to do was accept the situation. He really didn't have any serious problems preventing him from honoring their custody arrangements.
Anyway, that really wasn't the entire point of the film. It was like hurry up and get to the part where Daniel impersonated an old lady and Robin Williams can showcase his amazing comedic talents.

I disagree. Abuse or not, Miranda is under no obligation to be with someone she doesn't love anymore. Not even for the children.
Living with two people who can't stand each other is far more detrimental than a divorce. That type of life is not worth the stability.
So many stories, so little time.
