I think movies being better than the books they're based on is a lot more common than they get credit for. There are a number of movies I suspect are better than the books I haven't read (such as
Blade Runner (1982)
,
Apocalypse Now (1979)
, and
Jaws (1975)
, for instance).
I think part of the reason is that many good movies are a lot more known than the books they're based on (in addition to some of the ones I've listed above and below,
The Green Mile (1999)
,
The Exorcist (1973)
, and the
James Bond
movies are fairly obvious examples).
Anyway, these are some of the films I prefer to the books. I should point out that I don't necessarily consider all these books great, but I do really like the movies.

The Thing (1982)
The Princess Bride (1987)
Jurassic Park (1993)
Hamlet (1996)
The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
,
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002)
, and
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003)
The Book Thief (2013)

The film is good, but the book much better in my opinion. The last part of the book sums up the whole theme of the work, to make the best of what remains of the day for the main character as two butlers compare their lives. The film ending chasing a bird around simply does not compare.

How about a crappy book that was made into a very good movie? I'm speaking of The Bridges of Madison County, a pretty clueless book that become cohesive and moving on film.

Do android dream of electric sheep filmed as: blade runner
The orchid thief filmed as: adaptation
I, however, do believe that the book -The Remains Of The Day by Kazuo Ishiguro is just as good as the movie
