He was reading a lightweight romance novel usually read by women. He was embarrassed that she caught him reading it. I doubt he had much formal education since he had been in service all his life.

by Houston Stewart Chamberlain, specifically chapter five. That's what prompts him to decide to evict the two Jewish maids. It's a particularly unscientific piece of rubbish that helped inspire the Nazis. The book was very influential and popular in its day. Darlington is portrayed as the same type of Germanophile as Chamberlain was in real life.
