I totally agree with you. He was so much more than what the screen ever picked up. There was so much more to him than what people saw.
He had that charisma, coolness and charm that few actors naturally have.
He definitely deserved an Oscar for Tombstone and one for his portrayal of Jim Morrison. If you can put aside that the movie only showed the nihilistic side of Jim, Val did an exceptional job of simply becoming him. He was born to play that role and no one else could have done it. He embodied the role. The movie also primarily used Val's vocals and a mix of his and Jim Morrison's.
The Acadamy has become a total joke. It has been for quite a while now. It's become nothing more than a political display of elites patting each other on the back with purchased awards. It's too bad to see it come to this.

Great film. And Val reeked of two things. Charisma and Coolness. One of a Kind. Loved the guy.
He was my favorite character in this film. He was also my favorite character in Heat.
He got robbed of an Oscar when he played Jim Morrison. He literally became Morrison.
He should have won best actor and they didn't even nominate him. Fuck The Academy.

You're missing my point as to me saying "no one knew who he was" then because I meant that to those guys in the bar he was just some random guy who they had no reason to fear and thus would not let some apparent nobody slap him around like that, and he was not shy about using the gun anyway after Wyatt walks outside he was coming out to blow his head off until someone mentioned who he was and not to do it. Russel was much better in the Hateful Eight and I don't blame him for the faults of Tombstone I blame the writing and the director and whoever decided to give them those stupid mustaches, they should of just let them grow out a real one even if it didn't look as big. If that scene is documented fact then I take it back to me it just seemed like a plot device, guys in the old west like that were not likely to be pushover wimps like that, in the scene right before it some of the townspeople seem to be afraid of Billy Bobs character and if he was such a wimp they would of booted his ass out of that saloon long before that.

that scene in the beginning when he slaps around Billy Bob just came off as ridiculous because Russel can't sell it
IMO, Russell sold it very well with an intimidating steely-eyed stare that matched the best of them.
no one knew he was Wyatt Earp in that bar and Billy Bob would of shot that stupid little 10 cent Joke shop fake mustache off his face if he came in like he ran the place like that.
There was no reason for anyone to know who he was. YouTube and Wikipedia hadn't been invented then. Sorry, but the moustache was real.
I love that in movies when a guy cowers to the hero because "hes a badass" when the other guy has a gun as well, toughness means nothing to a gun.
A gun only means something if the person carrying it has the nerve to use it.

I had heard such good things about this movie and tried to watch it several times when it came on tv but couldn't get into it and I finally sat down and watched it all the way through and I agree that its pretty boring, there were a couple decent scenes but its just not very engrossing. First of all having that pretty boy Michael Biehn play the main villain is a big mistake, that guy is not intimidating at all and also Kim Delaney just ruined every scene she was in. The Good The Bad and the Ugly is my favorite western and one of my favorite movies ever but to be honest there aren't many others that keep me glued to the screen like that movie does. In terms of modern westerns I think Unforgiven is a way better movie than Tombstone, Tombstone just felt more like a costume drama to me and didn't seem gritty at all to me. I like Kurt Russel too but I didn't buy him as Wyatt Earp, that scene in the beginning when he slaps around Billy Bob just came off as ridiculous because Russel can't sell it, no one knew he was Wyatt Earp in that bar and Billy Bob would of shot that stupid little 10 cent Joke shop fake mustache off his face if he came in like he ran the place like that.
