The problem with most modern westerns is the characters look immaculate, well groomed looking. Old westerns, mainly spaghetti westerns the characters were dirty, unshaven and sometimes deformed looking.

What is a realistic Western for me to watch?
Not really a western, and it’s kinda slow. But this 1979 film,
Heartland
(starring Berta from Two and a Half Men) really captures the essence of the bleakness and isolation of early prairie life. It’s actually based on the letters of a pioneer woman (Elinore Pruitt Stewart)
As far as westerns go, much of the Hollywood westerns, are based on the dime store novels of yesteryear, rather than realism. But typically, those that do not have happy endings, tend to be more realistic.

, with Paul Newman, is a good one to check out.

Unforgiven
if you want realism.

Got this in a suggestion the other day NZer. You might find it interesting.
1:10 Dust (It was worse than imagined)
1:20 Outhouses (I think you call them Dunny’s down under)
3:40 Bathing (Not often, and with “recycled” water).
4:40 Body odor (Considered a natural part of life. It was also widely believed that too much cleanliness endangered one’s health, by opening up the pores to germs and diseases.)
7:05 Women were generally a little cleaner than men (But only a little 😄 )

Can't beat the Sergio Leone westerns for graphic realism. Those guys only washed every leap year.
