I just watched this movie again tonight for the first time in years. I used to watch this one all the time and I still really enjoy it.
I'm a lot older now and I was kind of surprised to see how many hidden "gay" things were in this movie.
Of course the gay cab driver is the only obvious thing in the film. Then you have male frontal, drama class, designer fashion, art, a truck driver that turns down a slutty female, an almost male kiss between the warlock and a gas station attendant, the warlock pulling the carny over to "the other side", a cross dressing little person, all of the adults are single males, the triangles on the birth stone, etc All wrapped up in a story about a man in search of six pieces of jewelry, each one being a color from the gay pride rainbow.
You can also read a lot of homosexual subtext into other scenes. For example, after the son "comes out" of his mother, there is a scene where she has locked him out and he is begging to be let in.
I believe Hickox took the script at face value and created a film that is stylish and pays homage to many other horror films. The script however defintely has an underlying homosexual theme that plays on the most popular gay stereotypes and most common jokes in the gay comunity.
You'd almost have to be gay to notice the inspiration behind certain scenes
The Warlock pulling the sluts hair off like pulling a Drag Queen's wig off.
Two warriors making love before going into battle think of the Spartans
The two men bring the boy into manhood (rebirth) and help him to understand his (true self) and prepare him for the journey ahead. Then you have the girl who must do the same, but she is rejected by man and must do it on her own.

Paula Marshall is terrific.I loved her and her the husband Tom.He was magnificent.I even got him his first acting job on stage in a play,THE PINK TRIANGLE. In it he had to stand in a cage, nude at attention, being humiliated. To be honest I have no idea how he never got an erection.

I would absolutely despise Hellraiser III were it not for Paula Marshall. I remember my glimpse of it in a small first look on MTV news and thought wtf it looks like a weird cheap foreign film. It just didnt look right.
Now that I think about it I seem to recall thinking Hickox was cool, but that he was ripping off Depalma in terms of shots and stuff.

My best friend,Dan Ireland , Who died last week at 57 years old, worked at Vestron and discovered Tony. Dan was so impressed by Tonys parents, his mother being a first class editor and his father a well known director. Dan did realize he made a huge mistake starting Tony's Career.Did I mention Hellraiser III . I'm not Necessarily proud of these films but for my work.

Well, I'm not gonna lie. At the time, all the stupid attempts to get infront of the camera rather than stay behind it did make me question him. Either way it doesn't really matter. He never took off. He never improved.
I just feel that in a time of cheap straight to video horror, he was managing to do something a bit better than what was available. I rank him with other directors whom I thought were cool but never made it, like Kevin S Tenney.
He may be a big dildobut I liked the movies.

you are entitled to your opinion. just so you know , I did Waxwork,my first film with Tony, Next came Sundown,I think it was Warlock next, and my last was Invasion of Privacy. So the truth is that Tony and myself liked one another, But I never thought he was a dood director. At times it was painful to witness.

And you don't see the subtext in this film? In the least?
Look lady, you being gay isn't going to excuse you on any level. I am the OP of this thread. I am the one who stated all the goofy crap I saw in this movie. I wasn't deliberately going around trying to find the gay in.everything and I do think that at the time Hickox showed a lot of promise.

Anti gay remarks? I happen to be gay myself so in the event I may Criticize todays sad gay culture ,I believe it's my duty to point out their foolishness.

Seems like all you do on imdb is make anti-gay remarks and claim to work on films. But heythere are aholes in every profession. I liked Hickox. I wasn't crazy about his cheesy cameos but aside from that I think he really knew how to give a stylish flow to action scenes and he did way more creative things than his budget allowed which I'm sure in turn brought production value down a bit.
He was without a doubt one of my favorite directors from Waxwork to Hellraiser III.

Well, I found the way Julian Sands was borderline playing with Chris Young's nipple while menacing Young with the ceremonial dagger at the end to be a tad gayish.

It really is amazing what people will read into things that were never intensional. There was certainly nothing homoerotic intended. I worked on this piece of beep . The closest thing Hickox should ever get to a film set should be with a broom in his hand.I like Tony as a person but a terrible director. After very take he would say "BRILLIANT", which they cleary were not.

You should see him in Ken Russell's GOTHIC.
He shares an onscreen kiss with Gabriel Byrne, who played the bisexual Lord Byron.
Not to mention Siesta, where he played an "angel" in a menage a trois

I just got done watching this for the first time. I will admit that I do tend to agree with the OP about a lot of this stuff. I'm not gay, but I did pick up on a lot of what he/she said about the movie. Plus, Julian Sands does come off as a little gay in this (as he did in the first Warlock movie, IMO), although he was awesome in it.

Definitely. More examples (about 20 mins into the movie):
"people live in fear what they don't understand."
"I'm going to San Francisco."
"I'm just confused."
I'd say the writer or director was definitely coming-out in a subtle sort of way.
