I am not a big fan of Friends.
I really dont get all the hype and all the high ratings. This is a so so show at best.
So maybe this was answered already but on the very first episode Monica introduces everyone to Rachel and says you remember my brother Ross right? But Ross is not the only person Rachel had met before. There is one episode in which she interacts w/ Chandler years before season 1.
Whats up w/ that?

I don't. I said I don't THINK they are bothered. Perhaps they have looked at the replies. But not bothered enough to post a response is all I mean.
They had not written that part yet.
And they are not going to decline to write a scene that they want to write because of a minor contradiction with the pilot. They will always sacrifice continuity for a joke or a plot line.
That is the way that sitcoms work.

Except Ross has been obsessed with Rachel since high school and it's highly unlikely that he wouldn't discuss that with his best friend (Chandler).
Meanwhile, Chandler losing his toe was memorable enough an event (among all the others) for Monica to know that Rachel and Chandler knew each other.
Bottom line it was the pilot they didn't know these character backgrounds yet.

Yep. Or they could just be keeping their memories to themselves, perhaps out of embarrassment from the make-out session, or whatever other reason they might have.

This comes up frequently. As people say, it is a typical inconsistency where the writers decide to alter back stories to suit the comedy.
I always feel though that it can be explained away.
Although the Rachel/Chandler meetings seem big at the time we see these flashback episodes, each meeting was very fleeting and could be easily forgotten about years later.
Monica was shocked and surprised to see Rachel in her wedding dress at the coffee house in the pilot, she didn't necessarily have time or clarity of thinking to compute in her mind that Chandler may have met her before.Equally Chandler may not remember the earlier encounters right away.

Then they decide to throw the whole lot to the wind and have Chandler and Rachel make out in the college party flashback

It's the pilot, and the characters hadn't been established yet.
In season 3, they decided that Rachel met Chandler once before. During the flashback when Central Perk was a bar, Monica sees Rachel, and tells Chandler who she is. Then Rachel does meet him briefly, and imagines having sex with him later.
Then after Monica and Chandler got together, they decided it'd be better if Rachel had met him at 2 Thanksgivings at Monica's house.
Just typical sitcom inconsistencies lol
