I really love the mood of this movie - dark, mysterious, sad, facing the childhood demons and the redemption. What other movies do this well?

I might possibly be flamed by this - but I think "The Butterfly Effect" captures this atmosphere w/ flashbacks, mood, etc (even to some part the abuse).

That's another movie that stays with you. Has a very oppressed and claustrophobic feel to it.
I read the book when it first came out, and of course, the book is a heavy read, but the movie was good too.

A good example is the psychological thriller "Identity", with John Cusack, Ray Liotta, Amanda Peet and several other drifters who are trapped by a huge rainstorm in a remote, Nevada motel. The whole thing takes place at night so it's very dark but the constant rain adds to the tension.
Other examples usually occur in horror films but the tradition has spread to television, with shows like Breaking Bad setting specific tones for moods or even characters (for example, each time someone goes to Mexico, they are drenched in sepia!). Another recent one is Mr. Robot, in which each character gets his or her own palette, with the overall look of NYC usually being gray and bleak.
For a fun example of using color to define mood, try the film "Pleasantville", in which 50's TV buff, Tobey Maguire and his sister Reese Witherspoon are "zapped" back into the show's 1950's world of black-and-white. Slowly, as they change their surroundings, things and people begin to turn into technicolor.
