Was the woman never taking outside?
Wouldn't it be best for Dolores's back to have the old woman on the ground floor?
I don't let anyone hot-comb out my HAIRitage!

I got this as well. She wanted to be high up and in a position of status. A rich person or King would never sleep on the ground floor but instead the high chambers of a castle, or tower or something. Even in today's society the top unit of condos/high rises etc. are the most expensive and reserved for the very rich.
Even though it's a bigger pain convenience wise (stairs/elevator/moving, etc.) people still prefer it. Away from view, noise, security, etc.

For exactly the same reason that the silver needed to be polished, whether it needed it or not; for the same reason she had to change the sheets, wash them and let them dry outside.
Not just because Vera wanted it that way; but because to do it any other way wouldn't be proper. The owner/master/mistress of the house does NOT live on the ground floor. It simply isn't done in polite society.
I want the doctor to take your picture so I can look at you from inside as well.

Bingo! Just a stubborn woman who wanted it the way she wanted it. Convenience didn't matter to her.
