The vampire craze is far from over: Author Anne Rice is prepping a small-screen adaptation of her genre-defining book series The Vampire Chronicles.
In a statement posted to Facebook, Rice reveals that she has reclaimed the theatrical rights and is currently developing a TV pilot script and series outline with son Christopher Rice, which is said to be a faithful rendering of the book series.
The first novel, 1976s Interview With a Vampire, was the basis for a 1994 film starring Brad Pitt and Tom Cruise. Book No. 3, Queen of the Damned, was also adapted for the big screen; starring Salems Stuart Townsend and R&B singer Aaliyah, it was far less successful upon its release in 2002.
Over the years you all have told me how much you want to see a Game of Thrones-style, faithful rendering of this material, she says. Well, I have heard you. I have always heard you. What you want is what I want.
For those unfamiliar with the source material, The Vampire Chronicles first introduced readers to Louis, an aristocrat in 18th Century New Orleans who was transformed into a vampire by the menacing Lestat. Subsequent releases have focused on the Lestat character.
A television series of the highest quality is now my dream for Lestat, Louis, Armand, Marius and the entire tribe, she writes. In this the new golden age of television, such a series is the way to let the entire story of the vampires unfold.
A dozen books already comprise the Vampire Chronicles series, with a 13th release, Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, due out in stores later this month.
