Man, no one could survive that; and this in a movie involving cartoon physics set in the real world. Almost seems like overkill.

It was done in a cartoonish manner, but:

Dorian was dead once he hit the water. He couldn't get out of the pool once it started twirling and he prob would have drowned once he went down the whole. If not that then def the knife stabbing him, probably at the top or crown of his head.
Another one of the good examples of magical irony The Mask is full of.

I would say it would be a combination of drowning and the knife that went after him.

I'd imagine Dorian ended up somewhere at the sticky end of a sewage pipe somewhere near a polluted beach or coal mine and would have had to take many showers before he could go out again.

Well I think he could've drowned or stabbed by the knife that followed. But in the original script Dorian is blown to smitherenes and Mrs.Peenman find the mask and puts it on. See the script on http://sfy.ru/?script=mask

What's really sad is that Richard Jeni, his co-star in part one committed suicide. He was one of the best things about the film.

Yeah. Jamie Kennedy, the CGI baby, the director and the writer ruined everything. I hated Jamie's musical scene. The reason why Jim Carrey's "Cuban Pete" was funny because it was random and it occurred in front of police officers who are pointing guns at him.
Oh and I still think Dorian survived the drain. He could easily dodge the knife that was following him.

No one said he actually "died".
But it was assumed because he was sucked down a huge drain and most probably drowned.
In the original Mask sequel, Dorian was supposed to return from the sewers and act as the villain once again. Hence the title 'Revenge of the Mask'.
