I was going through basic training during the filming of this movie. Our drill sgts did their best to keep us from the outside world which meant we had no knowledge that they were filming this movie on base. Until of course the Victory Tower scene.
My squad was standing in line for the repelling lesson and some raggedy dressed (blouse unbuttoned, sagging pants, hat sideways) private started talking crap to us. Asking us how we could put up with being yelled at all day like that. How he wouldn't put up with it and the things he'd do and so forth. One of the guys in line finally question him and asked if he was one of the actors. I remember his response "NAAW, I'm a Rapper!!" Someone then recognized him as Marky Mark(this was before he was 'Mark Wahlberg', he was 'Marky Mark') and he confirmed his identity. some of us in line could care less, some were star struck and a couple of guys were even teasing him as they were from the gangster sub-culture that was so popular in that day.
Anyway, at some point a (real) drill sgt and one of the biggest meanest looking ones we had, approached the group to tighten up the commotion that had started and seeing Mark with his sagging pants and dogtags hanging out, started going off on MR. Good Vibrations. Mark responded with "Naw, I aint a soldier" That set the Drill sgt off even more. he got up in Mark's face and just went ape sh!t over him disrespecting his uniform and he doesn't care who he is and it gives him more reason to rip his head off. The whole incident ended with Marky Mark quickly adjusting his uniform, dropping his yo' boy accent and apologizing then walking off.
I respect Wahlberg as an "actor" now and I am glad he has let go of the Marky Mark alter ego and embraced his acting talent, but I can't watch a movie with him that does bring up that memory.
