Having gone through basic training, this movie is pure crap. The fact is, soldiers who are that FUBAR would be kicked out of the military before basic training was completed. And they CERTAINLY would not bring in a civilian to help them out. Of course, nowadays, they would probably be allowed to pass basic training with flying colors

I've been working overseas as a contractor for 12 years in Panama, Germany and Italy.
In all the college courses I've taken over that time, the closest thing I came to a military teacher was a retired army major. I guess ESPECIALLY after 9/11 it was hard for military troops to be able to commit to teaching a 2-3 month course.
My memory isn't as good as it used to be. Also, my memory isn't as good as it used to be.

This movie is believable I never knew that it was based on the screenwriter's experiences until now. I have heard of military bases employing civilian instructors for various reasons. One of my college professors told us about he taught geography topic courses at an Air Force base in Oklahoma for awhile.

Actually, with basic training nowadays, it's completely believable. The army is having so much trouble meeting its recruiting quotas, they have to salvage as many people as they possibly can.

This was a TRUE story. Author Jim Burnstein really DID teach kids Shakespeare while at Selfridge ANG Base in Harrison Township, Michigan, which is why it was set in Detroit. A base in South Carolina filled in for Selfridge, but the opening scenes were shot in Detroit, and when they went across the Canadian border to see the play, they actually crossed the Blue Water Bridge in Port Huron, and saw it at Stratford, Ontario.

First off, it is fiction, so please keep that in mind.
However, in regards to a civilian instructor: the story is based on the actual experience of the screenwriter, Jim Burnstien, as a civilian English teacher to work with recruits in Basic Training.

If I remmeber correctly, Jackson Leroy, was the squad leader, so would'nt that make him responsible for everyone who was part of the "Double-D's", which is why he ended up there. Kinda like, where they go, you go. A raw deal for him if they all washed-out of that class.

How long ago were you in? I went through boot camp and there were beep ups like Montgomery (Dwayne Wayne from A Different World). I personally think a guy like Jackson Leroy would not be stuck with a bunch of screwups. He seemed to have his act together and I can't understand why he was there to begin with.
