Jack Nicholson is usually the wild one. Off the rails, eccentric, whatever you want to call it.
Then we see him here instead as the common guy: honest, hard working, vulnerable. And he seems genuine with it too.
You may disagree, but I think this movie was truly one of his best.

Or as the New Yorker review went back when the movie came out: "A mild-mannered book editor gets bitten by a wolf, and slowly transforms into Jack Nicholson."

I was watching it tonight and thinking that it was really nice to see Nicholson just be an amazing actor instead of a Cinematic Icon.
Same with Laurence Olivier. I imagine they both thought/think back fondly, maybe wistfully, to when they were simply artists who were extremely talented and good at their craft. Perks, absolutely, but it must be tiresome always hauling around that superstar reputation.
(While I was musing on this, I remembered a short story where Picasso walks along the beach, drawing in the sand with a popsicle stick, knowing the waves will wash it all away. He just wanted to do his thing without all the associated fuss. RIP Ray Bradbury.)
