Originally I thought Xena looked better on the show and Renee O'Connor looked better in real life. I've come to a different conclusion over time though and now I prefer the latter period, and I think on some level I always have, even though I used to say otherwise. Xena was so predominant, I think I bought into her hype more than anything, however I always had a soft spot for the warmth of Gabrielle's beauty and I can no longer deny it. She was very angelic and feminine even as the character grew into a warrior over the years, and when she did increase her abilities towards the end of the show, she took shape and looked so aerobic, she sneaked up on Xena and put her to shame. Others say she looked butch, but I beg to differ as I thought she looked like what she was supposed to be which was an "Amazon Princess", except she was now a grown woman.
