Even though I thoroughly enjoy this film I can't bear to watch the part with John's friend's party. I appreciate it as a realistic reflection of life, as some people are really like this, but I cringe at it because it's so pretentious. Reminds me of this Woody Allen line from
Manhattan
(1979), "They probably sit around on the floor with wine and cheese, and mispronounce allegorical and didacticism."

Patrick: Your post itself reeks of pseudo-intellectual sophistry.

I give the scene a 10/10 for John Booth's Marcuse-style remark: "if there isn't something bigger than freedom, then freedom is just entertainment". Absolutely brilliant.

Yes, you see that a lot in films: People chatting about "how the other half lives" whether it's richer or poorer. In reality, they'd be talking about their own lives and oblivious to the other half.

I completely agree.
I don't think the film itself is pretentious, but that scene was excruciating.
It was such a cliche; oh let's drink wine and talk about how much we hate rich people, consumerism blah blah blah.

Are you saying the party was pretentious, or the film was pretentious for including it?
