Crying Freeman is comic book subject matter. From that we get anime. No disrespect to all of you moaning about lack of action, and how this film "got off track", and your dismal confusion. THOSE ARE OTHER MEDIUMS. Julie Condra's narrative is essential to this movie - in the context of this film it's what changed everything. It's an ancient theme, the maiden singing to the Dragon, turning something in its heart with her surrender to its teeth and claws. From the moment the movie begins, with the dragon rollling over Mark's delicious skin to the sound of patrick O'Hearn's dense soundtrack you know this movie is about subliminal things. If you know Christophe Gans you know it's about layers and layers. If you have eyes and a brain you can figure out it has Asian soul. Some things are necessary because they are. This movie has ages-old elements: sex tangled in violence, honor tangled in sex, death tangled in honor, all of it tangled in angst. Gans took it a step farther than pulp but kept the deep pulp pace. It's about what we keep secret, and how we court death, and how in the end it all fits in an instant, life, death, the choices that bring us to them and beyond.
I can buy a comic book, or an anime movie and get the other stuff. I bought this to get stoned on art. It's why I can watch BOTW with the sound off, or in French even though I don't actually speak that language. It's a visual high that strokes your brain through your eyes if you'll look deep enough to see. But that's pretty intimate to stare straight into. That's the power in Mark's eyes. He makes everything intimate. As for Christophe Gans, I'm sure he knows not everybody can take this kind of subliminal stimulation, but it's obviously what he saw in the original medium and what he wanted to show us with his eyes.
As for the sex scenes, there are two, both shot from angles that leave everything to the viewer's mind. They are artful metaphors, the first one for the peaceful and relieved embracing of death - the second for the imminent and forboding selling of one's soul.
I don't mean to sound arch, but it's all there if you bother to look. And I really like looking at this.

Coming from the view of someone who does not prefer the anime versions, I just love this movie. Mark Dacascos sexy looks and moves, Julie Condras soft, breathy commentary, accompanied with the very well laid out plot and direction made for some high quality movie viewing. One of his best!

Swiv-1
You've made your point, I might add, more graphically than necessary - at least I think I understand - though I doubt you actually moan in your dessert (desert perhaps?)
Be that as it may, my original post was in response to the folks who were lamenting the film as compared to the manga (printed version), and specifically dissing it for the explicit quality of the "sex" scenes (the kills are actually much more graphic).
My post is not an ad or an invocation to watch beyond your comfort zone, in fact I believe (it's been years now) I mentioned that it was intense and not for everyone. I was mostly commenting on the narrative, the director's POV and why I like Gans' work with Mark Dacascos.

A little too sensual if you ask me. I ware of the artisitic elements of the film but still as a movie I'm not gonna keep watching someting just cause of that. I can't help but think that this film although good, is alittle too stimulating and sensual, kinda like me grabbing my crotch moaning in the desert with the wind blowing in my hair.

I had to come back after all this time, just to see what else had landed on this plate. I can't help but respond to this because it just seems so obvious to me.
In regards to "strolling" through actions scenes.
How would someone who has been living with a death wish move around in a firefight?
I think the question is valid for either of the main characters.

Yeah, I think you got the points right on this movie. Those're the movies strong points.
The movie's weak points are it's action scenes.Strolling around casually in a firefight?

If movies could be judge by a one-dimensional scale from 1 (worst film ever) to 10 (best film ever), then the score for Crying Freeman would definately be around 6.6 out of 10. On the other hand; if we add up multiple scales and devide the sum equal to the numer of scales (and to the people who made their judgement), then the same result would probably appear. This is not a silly way to measure the quality of any movies; ITS JUST COMPLETELY WRONG!
Crying Freeman is a great movie in any respect. Ive seen this movie 8 9 times by now, and Im still going to watch it over and over again; the cartoonish/poparted dialogs; the way the story unfolds; the close-up (almost pornografic) breathtaking action- and violence-sequencies; the holistic uncompromising asianminded (buddhistic) and mythological (the society of the Sons of the Dragon) mood it offered - all perfectly summarized by Julie Condra's voice over in the end: "and wether we live or die we will be free".
I just wish I once and for all could see this movie in a blockbuster theater.

I believe you said it all. This film is NOT about hollywood flash and explosions. If its explosions you want watch xXx or some thing in that ilk. As for Crying Freeman its a film about emotions. Surrender, honour, love, pain, regret. . .they're all in there. This film is a ground breaker in its genre almost to the point of creating a genre of its own. The "thinking persons action film"? Those who watch it expecting something like the Manga films of the same name will be dissappointed, as the live action film is based on the Manga series but takes the narrative in a whole new direction. Anyway I cant put it any better than the above post. . . just watch it and look past the guns and explosions!

Wow,,,
Finally, somebody out there gets this film!!!
Maybe if we had had some better support on the distribution side, more people would have been able to see CF in its pristine theatrical state, which makes a big difference in how the film gets percieved (in my mind, anywayit's not a film for the small screen.)
Thanks for your very fair and accurate assesment of the film
