The professor (Hershey) was only supposed to be gone three days, which is how she left it with the guy who dropped her off with Gates (Berenger). They had been gone for a week when the Indians first showed up. They stayed a lot longer. Why wasn't some rescue search started? The law only came after Gates after he robbed the drug store.
